If you are a regular reader of this blog, you may have noticed that I have never had any guest author or guest blogger writing on it.
For the first two years I have only published content written by myself. But, after a long reflection on the subject and exchange opinions with many of my readers and colleagues, I have decided to change this situation and incorporate the guest blogging between my new strategies.
Most likely now you wonder why I made that decision. Well, the answer is quite simple.
I have understood that, despite being a professional blog (with a great personal influence), this is one of the best ways to not stop offering content in a very regular way in my blog and, at the same time, be able to play in depth topics in which I am not a great specialist or see them from another point of view different from mine (offering an extra quality value to my readers).
Another thing that has also motivated me a lot to take this important decision, is the satisfaction and the different benefits obtained (by both parties), thanks to my multiple collaborations as invited author in other blogs of the sector.
So I think this is a logical and necessary evolution, both to try to offer a greater diversity of content, and to further enhance the natural growth of my blog.
But as this issue of guest blogging is broad and gives as to make an article that breaks down and analyze a little better … this time I would like us to see together what it is, what are the advantages it brings and some other points or important tips to keep in mind to try to make a good collaboration or guest post.

What is guest blogging?
Guest blogging is a very common method or practice in the modern blogosphere, which involves inviting other bloggers to write their articles on our blog. That is, it is when a person offers or is invited to write a post of his own authorship on the blog of a third party.
This technique is widely used nowadays both by those invited authors who seek to increase their visibility, professional prestige and reputation on the Internet, and by the owners of those blogs that try to offer more quantity and variety of quality content to attract more traffic and / or diversity of readers.
1. Build a good relationship with other bloggers
One of the best things that has contributed me to write articles as a guest in the blogs of some colleagues is that these collaborations have linked us in a closer way. And thanks to this proximity, strong ties can be created with some of them. To this day, many of those professionals who have invited me to make a guest post in their blogs, habitually share the contents of my blog with their online community.
2. A guest post promotes greater exposure
Participating as a guest author on other blogs, makes it easier to get to know and reach new readers (and / or potential customers) that might otherwise have never had the chance to meet you. For example, in my personal case, some clients who have contacted me in recent months, say they have discovered my blog thanks to my monthly column in TecnoHotel (online newspaper on hotel and tourism).
3. Power your personal and professional brand · (Branding)
Related to the previous point. Thanks to the extra visibility provided by the guest blogging, your image and reputation start to look very strong. Many of the readers of the blog / web in which you collaborate, will begin to know closely your work and your professional abilities thanks to the contents that you publish. Then, over time, those people will also see you as a successful blogger or an authority on the topics you talk about in your posts (which is why it is very important to write on websites related directly or indirectly to your target or target audiences).
4. Encourages writing or reciprocal collaboration
It is a fact that if you have written a post for another blog and the relationship that has been forged with the blogger owner is good, he will also have a better predisposition to collaborate on yours. That is, it creates an ideal scenario for cooperation or the exchange of quality content (but in a more natural and advantageous way for both parties).
5. Diversify traffic sources to your blog
Your articles as a guest will help you get more qualified traffic to your own blog, because the reader who enjoyed your content will be more likely to go in search of more information. For example, my blog receives an average of +/- 15 vitas per day from TecnoHotelnews.com and a few more from other blogs (as is often the case with Ciudadano2cero.com). Of course it is not an extraordinary figure, but at the end of the month they add up to a negligible amount of qualified traffic or quality.
As you may have noticed, your articles on other blogs include a signature with a BIO or description and the social profiles in which you are active. That is, the guest blogging will make it easier for others outside your online community to also follow or connect with you. So, if what you bring is of good quality, you will have an important increase of followers interested in sharing your other contents.
7. A guest post enhances your writing skills
Writing regularly on other websites, in addition to your own blog, will also give you the opportunity to practice and improve your writing skills. In my case, most of the posts that I write these days, are light years of resembling my first publications (now it is much easier and more natural to write articles of more than 2,000 words, which may be entertaining enough to capture the attention of the reader).
8. Possibilities of extra income
Writing articles on your blog, and other blogs or online magazines, is also a great way to position yourself as a professional writer for reference. That way, maybe you can also get another source of income or make a profit by creating content for other companies or communication agencies. In my personal case, I started writing on Movistar’s blog (Contunegocio.es).
9. Get more potential customers
As explained in points two and three, the visibility and prestige of these collaborations can favor the acquisition of more potential clients interested in hiring your professional services.
1. You can deliver content more regularly
Keeping your blog updated is very rewarding. But regularly creating quality content also requires a lot of time, dedication and perseverance. Allowing other bloggers to post articles from time to time on your blog will give you the opportunity to relax and / or concentrate for a while on other important aspects of your business or professional activity.
2. It allows you to publish more variety of topics and contents
The guest blogging can bring a little more variety to your blog, which probably most of your readers will see very well.
Having different authors also means having the opportunity to publish articles with different topics, different perspectives or points of view and different styles of writing, preventing your blog from becoming a boring place.
These two points (the one and the two) are the main reason why I have changed my mind, accepting from now some contributions from other bloggers.
3. Build strong relationships with other bloggers
As I explained above, this practice allows both parties (host and guest) to have the opportunity to create relationships, links or alliances between bloggers.
4. Expand traffic and readership
If our guest blogger has a relative prestige and a good base of fans or followers, chances are that they come to your blog to read your contributions. The most immediate result of this action is the natural increase in traffic and the number of readers.
5. Helps you capture more audience diversity
Related to the previous point. By increasing the number of new readers, who come to read guest posts, opportunities for new subscribers are also amplified. That way, thanks to a broader audience, we will further enhance our online traffic and reputation.
As explained in points 4 and 5, by having more visitors thanks to the guest blogging, we will also have the possibility to attract more followers to our profiles in social networks.
Google currently penalizes practices related to Spam and SEO, which encourage the construction of forced or unnatural links. You will also have heard say to Matt Cutts that this is why Google can penalize your guest blogging.
But, look! Although this is totally real and can happen to you, I think you should not understand it so literally.
I explain, the searcher sees with very bad eyes and punishes the articles that are forced, written by Spammers or of poor quality (very short, +/- repeated, of subjects that have nothing to do with yours, with poorly constructed links , coming from networks that market these posts or links, etc.).
That is, if you do not want to have problems, only accept or write original and quality posts. Also, do not include more than two or three own links in those guest posts and do not all point to the same URL (diversifies).
The anchor text or anchor text (the word visible in a hyperlink), the more natural, relevant and coherent the better (do not put that text thinking only in SEO).
As the owner of the website, do not link to bloggers who are not trustworthy or who may be selling or buying links, because if they are penalized could negatively influence your blog (in the doubt, better heal in health and use the attribute rel = “Nofollow” in those links).
So, to understand us better, the guest blogging is not dead … What has shown is the misuse that was given to it in issues purely related to SEO positioning.
How to be a better guest blogger?
- Study the style and theme of the site you are going to publish.
- Be sure to write articles longer than 1000 words, because shorter posts run the risk of being considered spam by Google.
- Deliver original content, avoid duplicate articles.
- Share high quality professional content and discourage too much self-promotion.
- Disregard the use of anchor text enriched with keywords for SEO and do not abuse the links.
- It uses more viral titles and can increase the CTR.
- Have prepared a good BIO and profile photo, adapted to the requirements of that blog.
- Mainly, do not publish anything that you would not publish on your own blog.
- Share the post on your social networks.
- Pay attention to the comments and respond with sufficient urgency.
As I explained at the beginning, the benefits of guest blogging are much more than just thinking about SEO.
Therefore I see no reason why not continue to participate in other blogs and at the same time receive collaborations on my own.
