What is WeTransfer? Is a service which allows you to share heavy files with clients or with suppliers.
What is the advantage of a service like WeTransfer, compared to other services that allow you to share heavy files such as Dropbox or Box.net?
The essential advantage is that you can use the service without having to create an account. Or maybe you already have this account created but the person you are going to send the email to will need to create their own account in order to download the file. It’s annoying.
With WeTransfer, neither you nor your recipient needs an account to be able to exchange the file. The service is completely free if you send files that do not exceed 2GB, which really allows a professional use (designers, agencies, printers). Here’s how the service works.

What is WeTransfer: How to send “heavy-weight” files?
The process is very easy and, I repeat, totally free up to 2Gb. If you want to exchange more important files of up to 5 Gb with many people, you will have to create an account (payment, € 10 / month).
Step 1 – Put the interface in your language (only for the first use)
First, before completing the file exchange process, if you give the side tab of “WeTransfer” and the service appears in English, you can change the language in “Need We Transfer in another language?”. Let’s select “Spanish”, and suddenly, the platform has been put in your language, which is much more friendly.
The first thing is to add the file or files you want to share (in the example case, I have selected a text file) and load it. You will be able to see your file appear once the process is completed. You could add more files, as long as the 2GB limit is not exceeded.
Step 3 – Fill in the data of the recipient and the sender
I am going to send an email to myself, so you can see the emails that are made. You could share this file with up to 20 people (20 emails), in the free version.
Step 4 – Download and download the file in a single click – in 1 solo
Give the “Transfer” button. The platform uploads the file to the Internet, with which -warning-: if you want to share files extremely confidential, you should not use this service. The files will be available for 2 weeks and can not be deleted (free version).
In practice, only the person who will receive the mail will have access to this file (with a link).
The recipient receives an email from WeTransfer, which informs him that I (the sender) have uploaded a file and can download it by clicking on the corresponding button. Clicking “Download” opens a page where the recipient can save this file in their Documents.
Step 5 – Be aware of the actions of your recipient (s)
It is also interesting to say that the platform informs the sender, with 2 transactional emails, in the following situations:
- When the email has been sent to the recipient
- When the recipient has completed the download
This service is very useful in case of professional use, for example if you have to deliver a job before a certain time, since with WeTransfer you know if your client / provider has downloaded it. You do not leave anyone in the limbo without knowing if what they expected of you has arrived … or not.
